3/2/2010Merrylee Primary Mobilise the Entire School for Haiti
The whole school sprang into action on Friday to raise much needed funds for the earthquake victims.
Headteacher, Liz Mahindru said “After the Haiti disaster was discussed at the assembly this week, the children were determined to try to raise funds to send to help the plight of the Haitian people.”
The children were asked to give up something of their own in recognition of how privileged they all are. Children brought in the contents of piggy banks, full of 1p coins; others donated their week’s pocket money; some put the cost of their daily sweet ration in their class box; a few others sold on one of their own toys. All came to school dressed down on Friday for a donation to the fund.
Classes held fun runs, a raffle and cake stalls ‘Today in class we had a home baking sale and raised £85.25 for the people of Haiti.’ said Shona, Emma & Fin in P6/5
Elsewhere in the school there was total silence as Primary 7 had decided to spend an hour of quiet contemplation, researching the Haiti disaster, the relief operation, earthquakes and reading about the devastating effect on the Haitian people. They also took time to think about and appreciate their own environment. Their efforts raised £130 just from their class! The pupils said ‘“ we didn’t feel right about us having lots of fun to raise money, when children in Haiti had nothing” Another said “ my whole family paid up as they said the only time I’m quiet is when I’m sleeping!”
Mrs Mahindru added “The pupils, staff and parents have raised £1030.28 so far. A fantastic and generous effort by the whole school community”.
