15/3/2010Official Opening of Merrylee Primary School
Merrylee Primary School was officially opened on 8 March 2010 by Cllr Irfan Rabbani.
Guests including local MP’s, Councillors and Representatives from Glasgow City Council were treated to an impressive programme of singing and sketches by pupils from all classes of the primary school as well as from the adjoining Limetree Nursery.
Headteacher Mrs Liz Mahindru said, “The children performed superbly, as always, both on the stage and in their classrooms where they welcomed guests to see them in action. It was a pleasure to feel such warmth and encouragement from the large audience of invited guests. Another event to remember in the life of Merrylee.”
The fantastic new school boasts an impressive array of sustainability and has been designed as an integral part of the local environment and community. Energy and cost-saving methods included using10% of materials from recycled sources including recycled newspapers to fill wall cavities. The school also has a wind turbine jointly funded by Scottish Power, Glasgow City Council and the Energy Savings Trust which provides up to 12% of the building's total power consumption. A unique outdoor 'urban jungle' play area, designed in consultation with the Forestry Commission, Merrylee School's Environmental Committee, Parent Council and the Land and Environmental Services department of Glasgow City Council, features a suspension bridge, a large felled tree with cargo net for climbing, barrel dens, log seats, benches and this week pupils will start to weave willow rooms and a maze.
